Unidirectionally, Laterally Loaded Dowel-Type Fasteners Multiple-Bolt Joints

چکیده

For many years U.S. design codes modeled the design values of a multiple-bolt joint as the design value of a single-bolt connection multiplied by the number of bolts. The provisions were based on research conducted by Trayer (1932) who observed an equal distribution of load among bolts. This was despite the fact that research conducted as early as in the late 19 century suggested an uneven load distribution among fasteners of metal joints. Today however, it is widely agreed that the strength of a multiple-bolt timber connection loaded statically in one direction is less than n times the capacity of a single-bolt joint, where n stands for the number of bolts. That is, the individual bolts in a multiple-bolt joint do not share the applied load equally, resulting in higher stressed fasteners at certain locations. Individual fasteners fail before other fasteners in the same row are able to carry their maximum load. Hence, for stiff fasteners such as bolts, the total strength of a multiple-bolt joint loaded one-directionally must be smaller than the sum of the capacities of the individual fasteners. To assure safe design, the concept of effective number of fasteners was introduced (Fahlbusch 1949; Lantos 1969; Jorissen 1998).

Multiple-Bolted Joints in Wood Members--A Literature Review

This study reviewed the literature on experimental and analytical research for the connection of wood members using multiple laterally loaded bolts. From this, the influence of geometric factors were ascertained, such as staggered and aligned fasteners, optimum fastener configurations, row factors and length-to-diameter bolt ratios, spacing, end and edge distances, and the effect of mixed types...

Failure Mode Analysis of Aluminium Alloy 2024-T3 in Double-Lap Bolted Joints with Single and Double Fasteners; A Numerical and Experimental Study

This paper aims to study the mechanical behaviour and failure mode of Al 2024-T3 in double-lap bolted joints. To accomplish this, the effect of geometric parameters was investigated in both configurations of single and double fasteners. Using ABAQUS/Standard, a three-dimensional finite element model was developed and verified against the experimental results of the joints loaded in tension. In ...

Reversed Cyclically Loaded Dowel-Type Fasteners

In contrast to nailed connections, little research has been done on bolted connections using a reversed cyclic loading scheme, although cyclic loading provides important information about energy absorption and damping properties, which is essential when analyzing seismic performance. Dowrick (1986) noted that the hysteretic characteristics for the primary connection of a subassembly govern its ...

Load-carrying behaviour of steel-to-timber dowel connections

This paper details tests on steel-wood-steel connections with thin dowels carried out at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Connections configurations were selected in such a way that the influence of the main parameters such as dowel slenderness ratio, dowel strength, fastener spacing and end distance and the number of dowels could be studied. An important issue of the pa...
